Zenith Bank Deepens Penetration among Retail Investors; Shareholders Grow by 11% in Six Months

Despite maintaining the same level of shareholding between December 2025 and June 2026, the number of shareholders in Zenith Bank increased by 11% demonstrating a growing appetite for investment in the financial institution group among retail investors.

An analysis of the bank’s audited financial statements for Q2 2026 shows an increase in the number of shareholders rising by 91, 187 between half year ended 2026 and the end of 2025.

As at end of June 2024, Zenith Bank had 653,048 shareholders with 31.3 billion units of 50 kobo ordinary shares issued and fully paid for. However, following a recapitalization exercise mandated by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the bank raised N350 billion ($263 million) through a combination of right issue and public offer.

This exercise boosted its issued shares by over 9.7 billion units, increasing number of shares by over 20% to 41 billion units by December 2025.

Between December 2025 and June 2026, the number of shareholders holding 10,000 units and below increased by over 90,000 (almost the same level with the overall increase).

Market sources disclosed that diaspora investors seeking opportunities in their country of origin have also largely contributed to the surging interest in the Nigerian financial markets and in stocks with fundamentals like Zenith Bank.

Nigeria’s financial instruments have become attractive to retail diaspora and institutional foreign investors in the last three years against the background of cheaper local currency and increasing level of liquidity in the foreign exchange market.
